Corazon Cojuango-Aquino: The Housewife Who Became A President

Category : , ,

Former Philippine president, Maria Corazon Cojuangco-Aquino, died early Saturday morning, August 1st 2009. After battling with cancer for a year,Tita Cory as she is lovingly called finally succumbed to her illness. A month before, people in the Philippines have already been doing prayer rallies and holding masses for her after they have learned that her condition turned for the worse.

Nothing was known much about her except for the fact that she was married to one of the most brilliant and charismatic personalities in Philippine politics, Benigno "Ninoy" Aquino. During the turbulent years of the Marcos presidency, the Aquino family has suffered so much and have to endure a lot of pain and heartache for Ninoys ideology. I don't think his wife might have shared the same fervent love that Ninoy exhibited for his country but being a dutiful and loving wife, Cory stayed by his side and supported his political ambitions. Although, it didn't really hurt that much that they belong to one of the country's most affluent families, they were not spared the harsh realities of what a dictatorship can do to you regardless of your status and influence.

During the time that Ninoy was fighting for his political career, I felt that there was not much of a support for him coming from the Filipino masses. I guess that this could be attributed to the fact that since the Cojuangcos and the Aquinos came from the 1 % of the well-to-dos in a poverty stricken country, most Filipinos could not relate to them and think they are just into politics for whatever it could offer them aside from money ...  perhaps Fame, more Fortune and the most heady of it all, POWER.

However, all these things changed when Ninoy was shot and killed at the Manila International Airport (now "Ninoy Aquino" International Airport) on August 21, 1983 coming home to the Philippines after a 3 year exile in Boston, Massachusetts in the US. His blatant assassination woke the Filipinos from their slumber from political apathy. His death finally made the Filipinos realized that Ninoy truly loved his country and was willing to die for it as was his mantra for the several years that he was in jail. Or, maybe, he was a just an obstinate fool ... But whatever it was, Ninoy became the modern day hero of the Filipinos long suffering from the Marcos' oligarchy which then later on led to a full dictatorship.

His death brought to the forefront, his humble and quiet wife, who was more comfortable hidden in the background most of the time. Whoever, had the propitious idea to convince Cory Aquino to run for the presidency against Marcos in 1984 were either idealists or simpletons. I guess at that time nobody would really like to run against Marcos for to do so would be financial and political suicide. From what I remember, Cory took most of her advise from her spiritual advisers from the Catholic Church, being a devout and spiritual person herself. Besides, the thought that she could continue Ninoy's legacy and clear the Aquino name from all the charges brought up by the Marcos regime finally push her to accept the nomination. Unknowingly, it was a most auspicious move. From her nomination to her winning the presidency, everything about it was unconventional. Though at first, it seemed that she lost to Marcos during the snap election in 1986, the Filipino people catapulted her as the rightful winner by taking their sentiments to the streets with the rich, the poor, the young & the old, the church and later on the military all taking part in this momentous event in Philippine political history. This was the birth of the so-called "People Power". And for the first time in 26 years, the Filipinos took a stand and defied the Marcos regime amidst guns, tanks and uniformed officers still loyal to the Marcoses.

Though her presidency was wrought with a lot of uncertainties and ineptness, she tried her best to lead the country the best way she can. These however, drew criticisms to her even from those who initially supported her.  Sad to say but to take over the leadership of a nation, where 26 years of plundering by the Marcoses and his cronies, and restore the country towards a better future will be a gargantuan & herculean task to accomplished. Realistically, not even experienced statesmen, economists and businessmen could undo the damage that was left in the wake of the Marcos' greed and the thirst for power in a few years.

Cory might not have accomplished much during her years as president of the Philippines and as a result a lot of people where disillusioned but this has not diminished in any way her resolved to make a difference and set examples to her constituents. She stubbornly and continually lived a very simplistic life before, during and after her presidency shunning an ostentatious life even though she was to the manor born and could rightly afford it.

Though at first, she gave you the impression that she is weak and meek but with all the things that has happened to her, to her husband and to her family, one can discern that this woman's spirit is powered by her strong spiritual belief and faith.

Now, Cory is gone and needless to say, I am sure that she will be remembered with high esteem. She has indelibly sealed her place in Philippine history not only for being the first Philippine woman president but also for how she hurdled all the obstacles that she had to go through in life with quiet resolve. She has exuded a quiet elegance about her by perseveringly going on with her daily activities as the leader of her country. And though she was  reluctantly thrown into the limelight, she never really buckled down in public nor did she show any signs of weakness even if her detractors were eating her alive in the media everyday during her presidency.

For this alone, she has my admiration and respect.

I am sure that she is now happily reunited with Ninoy and finally enjoying the togetherness and happiness that have alluded their married life while on this earth.

My Jams

Here are videos of some of my favorite tunes. You'll notice that these jams have one artist in common... Kanye West. No, I am not really a Kanye fan but it just so happened that some of his collaborations with other artists got some grooves to it that I like. I'm not really fond of the videos but I hope that most people get pass the visuals and appreciate the music more.

Dangerous: CPRDC's new tribute to Michael Jackson

Category : , ,

To say that Filipinos love anything and everything Michael Jackson is an understatement. A new video was released a day ago with the CPRDC inmates dancing to a medley of Michael's song. Some have maligned and critized these performances but I believe that millions more have also enjoyed and appreciated it for what its worth. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did. Also, the dancing gets better and better... and that's what matters.

Kuroshio Sea

This video of the main tank taken from Okinawa's Churaumi Aquarium in Japan is so breathakingly beautiful and mesmerizing. Considered to be the 2nd largest tank, second only to the Georgia Aquarium located here in Atlanta, Georgia, USA the video captures what goes on under the sea set to an enthralling music background ("Please Don't Go" by Barcelona). Thanks to Jon Rawlinson for sharing. Don't blink cause you won't want to miss a thing...

Warning: Watching this video will decrease your blood pressure, slow your breathing and put you in a meditative state. But most importantly, it will increase your sense of awareness to our connection and oneness with our sea-living brothers and sisters.

Tell Yourself by Clazziquai

Category : , ,

Clazziquai's recently released cd is called Mucho Punk. I don't know what the story behind the title and I am sure that anybody curious enough will find the answer somewhere out there. I've listened to the music in the cd and so far only one has really peaked my interest and this is track #4 entitled "Tell Yourself". All I can say is that this song could easily be identified as a Clazziquai song. My daughter just told me that some avid Clazziquai fans were disappointed because they didn't find much of the group's former identity in this new music. I don't blame them though, but I also have the artists' interest at heart for a change in the direction that they want to veer themselves into. Fans should allow this kind of exploration sometimes to give the artist enough reason to truly find themselves artistically. In the end, we the fans hope that they will eventually return to their roots.

Here's an MV of Tell Yourself which is my favorite so far. This is the Japanese version and they also have a Korean version which I have included here so you can listen to both versions.

Korean version

Either way, I love them both...

The North End: Boston's Little Italy

Category : , , , , , ,

I found this nice link to the North End in Boston which is known to be Boston's little Italy. I was searching for other notable restaurants in the area and discovered this link which is rather cool since it gives its viewer a street view of the North End. I thought that this was a brilliant move to draw people to this area and familiarize themselves with the ins and outs of Boston's little Italy.

Admittedly, we have only dined there once, at Antico Forno, last year to celebrate our 22nd wedding anniversary. The North End is a haven for anything Italian and food lovers agree that most of the best Italian restaurants, bakeshops, pizzerias and food shops can be found here.

I guess that what really hindered us to try the North End was the parking situation and since there are a lot of comparable Italian restaurants elsewhere in and around Boston, and now in suburbia, we did not really feel the need to go to the North End.

However, with the "big dig" and the changes to the area that had been going on for years now behind them, I thought that it was time to give the area a try and see what has been transformed. We were not disappointed though, because it was more than we expected and it did improved the area. Though parking is still a problem but there's parking garages around the area and it does not hurt to walk from there to where you want to go in the North End.

It is worth a try especially if you would like to experience what the North End has to offer. Remember, this is where Mike's Pastry is where ex-President Bill Clinton gets his cannoli fix. So what are you waiting for???? Boston's Restaurant Week is almost here and I suggest that you look into the restaurants joining this yearly event and make your reservations.

"Daydreaming" by Alex

Category : , , ,

One of my favorite songs from Korean music artist, Alex, of the famous group Clazziquai is "Daydreaming". This song was in his first solo album "Vintage Romance" and listening to this song truly gives you that feeling of old-fashioned romance when love was pure and simple and not as complicated and perverse by this generation's standard.

The song is sung in English and the Korean language but thankfully, the video presentation has English translation. The words are poignant, poetic and heartfelt that I can't help but feel nostalgic. The song conveys the lover's sentiment... and his longing for his beloved.

Wonder Girls in Boston

Category :

Korea's number one girl group "Wonder Girls" will be the opening act for the Jonas Brothers' concert this Friday & Saturday, July 17th & 18th at the TD Bank North Garden in Boston. The girls were invited by one of the brothers to open for them in some of their concert shows in their 53 cities tour. Boston just happened to be one of them so when an opportunity for fans came up to meet with the girls, my daughter, Karrol, couldn't pass this up. If you want to see a 30 sec clip of her entry visit her site here. Today, Karrol got a call from the sponsors inviting her to attend their 2 day meet & greet together with other WG fans.

Watch their "Nobody" video here, if you still haven't seen it.

Of course, their popularity in Asia has spawned parodies, tributes and covers to this song but this one takes the cake for me... I just loved it! The guy can truly and seriously dance.

Wale's "Chillin" in Boston & DC

Category : , , , , ,

I wouldn't have heard of this guy, Wale (wah-lay) if not for my good friend, Cisco Santiago. This time instead of being in the director's helm (Mighty Mystic's "Here I Am") Cisco's in several scenes (the club scene) in the MTV video made for Wale's song "Chillin". This song also features Lady Gaga and I think that this is a good move in order to appeal to more listeners. This video was filmed partly in Washington, DC and Massachusetts particularly in Chelsea (Broadway St), East Boston and this hip cool store called Bodega in Mass Ave., Boston. This store according to Yelpers has a secret entrance and if you're curious what it is, watch the video. If street clothes are your drift, then this is the store for you.

Anyways, back to the video here...

Here's a behind the scenes shoot if you're interested... you'll notice that Lady G had several outfit change but didn't make it to the cut. Instead, she ended up wearing this blue dress that looks like she was going to the prom which I believe is unlady-like of Gaga. Hmmmm, I wonder why??????
